Conducting a gap analysis
Conducting a gap analysis
This challenge focuses on conducting a gap analysis to describe the nature of a learning or performance problem and propose a potential instructional and/or non-instructional solutions and strategies.
Gap analysis is a process of determining the gap between actual situation and desired situation as well as the root causes of this gap.
- Identify the need
- Describe the nature of a learning or performance problem
- Determine the actual state and the desired state
- Describe the gap between the actual state and the desired state
- Determine the root causes of the gap
- Analyze findings to propose potential instructional and/or non-instructional solutions.
Your evidence should include a professional report on the findings of the gap analysis including the elements listed under the performance statements.
Your reflection should address:
- How did you determine or identify the learning or performance problem, including data sources you used?
- How did your artifact demonstrate your competence in each of the performance statements?
Examples: Performance Assessment and Design and Develop HPT Solutions and Evaluation Plan (EDCI 528); Design Document 1 (EDCI 572), Project Plan (EDCI 569 if taken in Spring 2021 or later).
For the challenge “conducting a gap analysis,” I am submitting my EDCI 572 Design Document part 1.
The challenge asks for evidence of having conducted a gap analysis to describe learning or performance problems and to show proof of proposing potential instruction/solutions. The attached artifact, Design Document, identifies a need for developing instruction, provides a description of a learning performance problem, explains the actual and desired state of learning, explains the cause of learning gaps, and proposes instruction as a solution to the problem at hand.
Design Document part 1 for EDCI 572 is meant to explain the need for instruction for a learner demographic and explain why the instruction is needed. The Design Document refers to parents at my facility, the Rebecca School, and their need for an online parent only platform. The need comes from parents hopes to have larger support groups filled with parents, like them, who have neuro-diverse students. However, due to confidentiality issues, parents must be trained to use a platform that is secure for them. This need of wanting a social online meeting space along with the need for confidentiality was the gap as many online platforms do not provide confidentiality to its users. So, the design document showcases how that gap was overcome through the design of an online platform.
This was the first Analysis Gap I ever performed as part of my graduate studies. This class would set the tone for the rest of my graduate studies as this is project was what taught me how to conduct research, perform data collection for target audiences, and design instruction.
Though short, the artifact identifies a need for developing instruction, provides a description of a learning performance problem, explains the actual and desired state of learning, explains the cause of learning gaps, and proposes instruction as a solution to the problem at hand. In the future, if I ever have trouble with developing a design document, I will continue to look back on this assignment. I hope to continue using the final form of this assignment as a “best-practices” example for both conducting a gap analysis and developing instruction.
